A1 Design Matrix

Alice in Wonderland, a book famous for its pointless points and revels in its confusing plot. Alison Coggins, an editor from pastemagazine.com shows us that minimalist designs can evoke the same power as any other design styles. Her minimalist approach to Alice in Wonderland in her Fairy Tale series is the shows the most power. In the center resides the 4 suits club, spade, heart, and diamond lined up vertically and overlapping each other about a quarter each. This overlapping on its own does not hint us in what the image might be portraying. Yet coupled with the oval shapes around the suits and the banner like shape with the words Alice in Wonderland placed over it, we can now see the image it trying to portray is that of a portrait; a portrait of a subject that is primarily red and black by design. With the ingenious positioning of each suit one can start to see the basic shaping of a person. A person who is red and black that is connected to the imagery of the primary suits in cards, perhaps the Queen of Hearts. Once the imagery, however subtle it is, is found then it becomes extremely hard to unsee. This is why I feel this imagery is successful. This design shows the gravitas and importance the Queen of Hearts plays in Alice in Wonderland as the antagonist. While the story is about Alice, in this design she is overshadowed by the narcissistic ego of the Queen she is famous for.
